Conference

Staging Difference:
Issues of Canadian Intercultural Theatre

Co-Hosted with Magnetic North Theatre Festival

Opening Reception:
Sep 25 @ 6pm | Walper Terrace Hotel

Symposium:
Sep 26, 27, 2009 @ 10am - 4pm | King Street Theatre Centre

This conference will raise the latest and most urgent issues of Canadian intercultural theatre. Canadian theatre's success and growth is dependent on its ability to engage a wider range of audiences from both the immigrant and Aboriginal communities, as well as its ability to attract the younger crowds of the high school and university populations. The MT Space believes that in order for Canadian theatre to develop new and organic forms of its own, its practitioners have to look seriously at contemporary, inter-cultural, and interdisciplinary themes, tools, and vocabulary. By bringing together theatre artists and audiences with various perspectives and forms of expression, theatre would have transformational power of building and defining a community of difference.

The conference is comprised of four main sessions: Funding, Creation, Collaboration and Dissemination.

Sep. 26, 27, 29, 30, Oct. 2, 2009 @ 5:30 - 7:30pm | Local Downtown Restaurants TBA

Art, like food, is meant to be taken in and shared with friends. We gather around it. We chew on it. We savour its flavours and nuances as it refreshes and nourishes us. We invite you to join us for dinner or drinks at a local restaurant. As we digest, we talk so that both food and art become part of us, and in turn, fuel our own lives and work. Each evening we focus on a different show, and while we break bread and raise a glass, let's wrestle with the art, appreciate its unique seasonings and textures, and celebrate our shared love for food and theatre!

Round Table Discussion

International Focus

Hosted by MASAHAT Contemporary Dance Network

Sep. 28, 2009 @ 10am - 4pm | Blair Rehearsal Hall /
King Street Theatre Centre

How do we get our work on the global stage? How do we join existing international performance networks, and establish our own regional, national and international networks to further disseminate our creations? MASAHAT (Landscapes) is one model of a network of contemporary dance festivals in Beirut, Damascus, Amman and Ramallah. It facilitates collaborative projects, joint programming and cultural exchange. They are here to share with us their success story!

Round Table Discussion

Local Focus

Hosted by COPA
The Coalition of Performing Artists
in the Waterloo Region

Oct. 1, 2009 @ 10am - 4pm | Blair Rehearsal Hall /
King Street Theatre Centre

The Coalition of Performing Artists (COPA) is a collective of grassroots arts organizations working together on the development of a local creative hub for our community. COPA has a vision for a downtown performing arts resource centre for dialogue, networking, mutual learning, collaboration and innovation. The two sessions will raise the questions of how do we work better collectively to ensure the vibrancy and growth of our arts and culture community? How do we establish working models to exchange creative ideas, and share space, management, marketing and human resources.
